LAS VEGAS--Anyone who has paid any attention to my recent monitor reviews knows I have a certain affinity for theSamsung SyncMaster XL2370.

So you can probably imagine my delight when on Wednesday Samsung announced what seems to be a followup to the XL2370, the PX2370.

At first glance the PX2370 looks similar to the XL2370, albeit with what may be a thicker profile. I'll be able to confirm this on Thursday when I get a good up-close-and-personal look at it from the show floor.

One of the most unique features is the proximity sensor, which automatically turns the monitor off when no one is near it. Kind of creepy, but cool.

Afghan girl optical illusion

Probably all of you saw this picture at some point of your life. Titled the “Afghan Girl”, this photo was named the most recognized photograph in the history of National Geographic. Although girl’s name was not known, her picture appeared on the June 1985 cover of the magazine. The image of her face, with a red scarf draped loosely over her head and with her piercing sea-green eyes staring directly into the camera, became a symbol both of the 1980s Afghan conflict and of the refugee situation worldwide. Gula was known throughout the world simply as the Afghan Girl until she was formally identified in early 2002.

Over time, many variations of Steve McCurry’s original photo appeared. At some point even in optical illusion form, as we see below. All I could find about this illusion, is that people can’t seem to look at it for too long. Apparently you get a headache, or become nervous at best. Maybe this isn’t the true nature of this illusion, but it just didn’t make me hallucinate like some other animations did. The view at this underwater restaurant is probably like none you've ever seen. Ithaa Undersea restaurant sits 16 feet below sea level at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Hotel in Rangalifinolhu, Maldives. Maldives is a country located about 300 miles from the southernmost points of India and Sri Lanka.

This is the world’s first all-glass, undersea restaurant. The 16x30 ft. space has a maximum capacity of 14 people, and meals range in cost from $120.00 to $250.00 per person. The hotel recommends making reservations up to 14 days in advance.

Amazing Solar Powered Bicycle

A solar-powered bicycle has been invented, which could soon take the strain off a commuter's legs and the environment.

The bright yellow 'Cycle Sol' operates like a normal pedal cycle but has a canopy lined with solar cells overhead. When the user pedals in the sunshine the rays charge up a battery which powers a small electric motor hidden in the back wheel.

This then propels the bike forward at speeds of up to 15mph. It also lowers the resistance in peddling to make it easier for the rider to cycle up hills.

The bike was invented by designer Miroslav Miljevic. 'I designed the bike as an eco-friendly piece of technology to help commuters.' he said.

Mr Miljevic, who is based at Z & Co Design in London, says that the motor can be fully charged while the recumbent bike is chained up outside on a sunny day. And when the sun isn't shining the bike can be charged up by plugging it into the electricity mains.

The Cycle Sol is in the concept stage at the moment but Mr Miljevic hopes to mass produce it once he has found a manufacturer.

'It is just like an electric bike but the motor runs on a battery that is powered by solar energy.

The Cycle Sol can be pedalled like an ordinary bicycle, or electrically powered with the flick of a switch

The bicycle can be left in the daylight to charge, even when the skies are cloudy

'There is a large flexible panel on the roof which is covered in solar cells that soak up the sun.

'You can leave it outside the office during the day to top up the rechargable ready for the ride home.

'These days solar cells are pretty good at picking up the lowest amount of light so it should still work when the skies are cloudy.

'At night time the small battery can be charged using the mains electricity in just a few hours.

'To save energy, the motor can be turned off or on so the cyclist could just use it when they're peddling up a steep hill.

'The handle bars are positioned on either side of the seat rather than at the front so you can lean back for a comfortable ride.

'It is still easy to balance and a belt inside transfers the left and right hand movements to the front wheel so you can steer.

'And if the worst happens and it rains, the roof will keep you dry.' Mr Miljevic added: 'At the moment the Cycle Sol is just a concept but hopefully I will be able to build it and manufacture it in the future.

'I believe it is just what the modern day commuter needs - it help you along your way while also being kind to the environment.'

What would happen if the Earth stopped spinning?

This very question was emailed to me and so I thought I'd just make it the topic for this week's article. Of course the likelihood for this actually happening in the next few hundred millions years is just about zero. But we can still speculate on what would happen anyway.

Earth is rotating at a speed of about 1100 miles per hour. If our planet suddenly stopped rotating, the atmosphere would still be in motion at that speed. The atmosphere would be moving so fast it would literally sweep the land masses clear of anything not anchored to bedrock, this would mean rocks, soil, trees, buildings, people and animals. All would be swept up into the atmosphere.

If the Earth's rotation slowed down gradually over millions of years, and this is the most likely scenario, it would be a very different story. If the Earth slowed down to one rotation every year, called synchronous rotation, every area on Earth would be in either sunlight or darkness for one year. This would be similar to what the Moon goes through where for two weeks the front side of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun followed by the front side being in darkness for two weeks.

But what if the Earth stopped rotating completely? In that case, one half the Earth would be in daylight for half the year while the other side would be in darkness. The second half of the year it would be reversed. Temperature variations would be far more extreme then they are now. The temperature gradient would affect the wind circulation also. Air would move from the equator to the poles rather then in wind systems parallel to the equator as they are now.

Even stranger would be the change in the Sun's position in the sky. In the above scenario, Sun would just have a seasonal motion up and down the sky towards the south due to the orbit of the Earth and its axial tilt. You would see the elevation of the Sun increase or decrease in the sky just as we now see the elevation of the Sun change from a single point on the Earth due to the Earth's daily rotation.

As an example, say we live at 30 degrees North latitude. In the Summer, at a longitude where the Sun was exactly overhead, it would slide gradually to the horizon as Fall approached, but since the Sun has moved 90 degrees in its orbit, it would now be due west. As Winter approached, you would now be located on the dark side of the Earth. You would have to move to a longitude 180 degrees around the Earth to see the Sun 1/2 way up the sky because in the Winter, the Sun is 50 degrees south of its summer location in the sky.

There would be other effects of the Earth's rotation slowing also. The magnetic field of the Earth is generated by a dynamo effect that involves its rotation. If the Earth stopped rotating, the magnetic field would no longer be regenerated and it would decay away to some low, residual value due to the very small component which is 'fossilized' in its iron-rich rocks. There would be no more 'northern lights' and the Van Allen radiation belts would probably vanish, as would our protection from cosmic rays and other high-energy particles. Losing this protection would cause serious health issues.

Be glad for our Earthly rotation, without it we would be much worse off!

Sony Ericsson kalder den for et ”purity product”, altså en form for et renhedsprodukt. Kodenavnet er ”Kiki”. Overfladen er præget af en uvant struktur og blot enkelte knapper; designet ligner intet vi tidligere har set fra Sony Ericsson.

Skærmen lader til at være lavet af glas, og skærmbilledet er umiddelbart projiceret på denne glasoverflade. Det giver mulighed for at skabe en slags dybde i skærmbilledet, og ser meget spændende ud. Det glæder vi os til at se mere til.

Umiddelbart har vi ingen specifikationer på Kiki, og designet overlader meget til fantasien. Der findes intet synligt kamera på telefonen, og skærmikonerne lader heller ikke til at der er tale om en specielt avanceret mobiltelefon.

Sony Ericsson calls it a ”purity product”, and its codename is ”Kiki”. The surface is influenced by an unusual structure and only a few keys; the design is nothing like we've previously seen from Sony Ericsson.

The display seems to be made of glass, and the screen image appears to be projected onto this glass surface. It makes it possible to create a sort of depth in the screen image, and it looks rather exciting. We're very much looking forward to seeing more of this.

We currently don't have any specific information about the features of this phone, and the design doesn't offer a lot of hints. There isn't any visible camera on the phone, and the screen icons seem to prove that it isn't a particularly advanced mobile phone.

We'll naturally follow up on the case, when more information about the phone is available.

Red Bull May Lead to Heart Damage, Scientists Say :O :O

According to the latest research, the popular energy drink Red Bull can increase the risk of heart damage. The participants of the study were university students aged between 20 and 24. Researchers found that just one sugar free can of Red Bull raised the level of stickiness of the blood and could lead to the formation of blood clots.

The target market of the caffeinated drink is Austrian students. After drinking a can of Red Bull scientists noticed that Austrian students had nearly the same cardiovascular profile as someone who has heart disease.

The company producing the drink denied the negative effect of Red Bull, which is, by the way, marketed in 143 countries around the world. According to the company's officials the drink passed several scientific tests that proved its safeness. They noted that the drink was not banned in any country where it had been introduced.

But according to Dr. Scott Willoughby, of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide University, the results of the study were alarming.

"After one can it seemed to turn the young individual into one with more of the type of profile you would expect to see with someone with cardiovascular disease. People who already have existing cardiovascular disease may want to talk to their physician before they drink Red Bull in future," the scientist said.

The 30 students who passed the test were shocked by the results. Previously some of them drank up to 8 can per night in order to stay awake to study. Most of these students are now refusing to drink Red Bull, saying they will never consume it again.
